5 Ways to Re-Design Your Website for Greater Marketing Appeal

Whether you run your own website that you started straight out of college or simply consult on the design and function of others, it’s one of the most important things to do to remain relevant on the web is to keep learning and growing.

Part of this growth includes having the fluidity of mind to change your website or blog design as needed. There are always things that must be done to keep up with the times and make sure your web space remains enticing.

It’s also important to continue to work towards a design that reflects the way you would like to monetize the site. Luckily, these goals can often work hand in hand. By re-working the design of your website, you can simultaneously make more room for monetization and attract more users from a marketing perspective. Here’s how:

1. Design for user efficiency first.

The ultimate goal of any website should be to provide the best experience for users. The better the experience, the more users will flock to the site, and the more potential to profit from your efforts. When you think about a re-design of any site, make sure to think first about what it is really like for the visitors.

By falling victim to marketing and advertising traps that actually make the site less simple to navigate, more time consuming, or downright annoying, you are sacrificing the quality and longevity of your web property to make money fast. More can be made in the long run by putting a premium on user experience.

2. Make appealing space for advertisements.

One of the biggest things making your blog or website less marketable is a lack of appealing space for advertisers. If you’ve been wondering why your site is getting a nice amount of traffic, but advertisers aren’t quick to bite, then it could be because the theme or layout of your website does not support appealing space for ads.

Make sure that you leave enough room on your site for ads to fit in an aesthetically pleasing way, and see that your site design is not so busy that it could potentially detract from an advertiser’s paid space.

3. Think about the 3-second eye scan.

Most web designers now know that most web users spend about a second or two scanning a web page before clicking away. You have to know how people are scanning your website to make the most effective re-design of your website possible.

Most users scan a web page at the top, from left to right, then quickly down the left side. If you want to grab attention, put all of the most important information on the top header and along the left side. This is also a good place for high-quality ads.

4. Limit unnecessary text.

This is a big one. But, unfortunately, way too many webmasters miss out on this simple quick-fix. By limiting the amount of small text of your webpages, you make them much more user friendly, to-the-point, and easy on the eyes.

Because users will scan your web page very quickly before deciding whether or not to click away, placing tons of small text on the homepage is not the best marketing decision.
