I had the pleasure of interviewing Clive Goodinson, founder and creator of Pixton. Clive works with his wife and co-founder Daina Goodinson. He imagined a website where people could share and collaborate on ideas and stories. Clive was inspired by his love of comics like Tintin, The Far Side, and Calvin & Hobbes. Clive imagined a world where anyone could create comics, regardless of their artistic abilities. Users can customize their own comics from using fully posable characters to props and speech bubbles. Now, anyone can author their very own comic.
Me: How can people benefit from using Pixton?
From fully posable characters to dynamic panels, props, and speech bubbles, every aspect of a comic can be controlled in an intuitive click-n-drag motion.
Clive: Pixton gives anyone the power to express themselves and communicate online in the graphical, narrative format of comics. Pixton is both a tool with which to create, collaborate, and share, and a fun and friendly community of creatively minded people of all ages from around the world.
Me: What are the range of applications in which you’ve seen people effectively use Pixton?
Clive: Teens and tweens sharing jokes and stories; adults illustrating political issues and opinions and posting them to Facebook, students writing narratives for school projects, such as a book chapter summary or explanation of a concept in science, and businesses replacing boring clipart in presentations, brochures, and training manuals.
Me: How much time, on average, does it take a user to create a comic strip?
Clive: You can create a comic in as little as a few minutes, by choosing the Quickie format. Or, you can spend as much time as you like and design your own characters and backgrounds, move your characters into different poses, and tell a compelling story. Check out the gallery for ideas and inspiration.
Me: How much does this service cost?
Clive: Pixton for Fun is freemium, meaning that you can register and create unlimited comics for free. However, for $5 dollars a month or $40 a year you can upgrade to Pixton+ and get all the extra features, such as Super Long and Freestyle comics, Comic Books, Contests, fully editable characters, community props and backgrounds, image uploading, and more.
Our educational product, Pixton for Schools, is available as a 30-Day Free Trial, and for purchase according to the number of students. For example, 300 students for 1 year costs $1.73 CAD per student.
Pixton for Business lets you register and create one comic for free, to try it out. Then, it costs about $5 per comic, depending on the comic format and licensing options.
Me: What are your plans for Pixton moving forward?
Clive: Pixton has come a long way from the articulated stick figures we started out with. We will continue to make Pixton more awesome, adding new characters, comic templates, and much more. Stay tuned to Pixton or follow us on Twitter at @Pixton for exciting announcements in 2012!
