Your Guide to Social Media Enlightenment – From Trending Topics to Innovative Startups

Keep up with the Changes on Google+

With the introduction of Google+ business pages recently, more people are getting on board with the new social networking platform. To help you get the most out of it, here are some of the newest features you may have missed.

Add a Google+ badge to your website
Google recently released Google+ badges to the public, allowing you to add them to your website or blog, to drive more traffic to your business page. Badges offer the options to +1 the page, or add to circles, as well as showing the number of users who currently have that page in their Google+ circles.image credit: Google+ Badges

Batch tagging of photos
Another recent update was the introduction of an easier way to batch-tag photos of the same person. Rather than tagging photos separately, the new feature allows you to group together all the photos in which the same person appears, and tag them in one go.

Direct connect search
With the introduction of Google+ business pages, Google search has added a new feature as well.

When adding a + symbol before a product or business name in Google’s search bar, the Direct Connect feature will take you directly to the corresponding Google+ page, and provide an option to add the page to your circles. You can even change your settings to add pages you find this way to your circles automatically. Direct Connect is still in testing, so not all pages and users will have it enabled immediately, but as it rolls out across the network, this could prove to be a handy feature.

Trending topics
Like Twitter, Google+ has added trending topics to its search results page. After searching for keywords, the Trends list shows up on the right-hand side of the page with links to each topic.

Bonus: secret emoticons

The Next Web recently shared a list of secret Google+ emoticons that can be used in the Google+ chat feature to add some fun to your conversation.

Are you using Google+? What are your favourite new features? Have you set up your Google+ business page yet? Leave a comment below to join the conversation.

Thanks Rachel! There is always so much to learn about the world of social media. It’s a very dynamic field. I think that’s part of the appeal though. I get to regularly exercise my noggin. :0)
